Threadbare Woman 'TBW #30 Ill Fitting' 27th July to 9th August 2020

TBW #30 - Ill fitting

Thread Bare Woman is an exploration of womanhood in midlife. Susan McKenna uses themes of domestic and sexual identity, loss, inheritance and media image to explore how external forces influence the internal narrative and lived experience of today’s woman in midlife. By holding space for women to share their stories Susan seeks to explore how women strive to move beyond projected labels and societal expectations whilst confronting their own selfward facing opinions and navigating the hormonally turbulent path that is perimenopause and menopause.

Rosa Parks. 27th June to 12th July 2020

'Rosa Parks' by Phoebe Hubbard. Mixed media. Price - £25 including charity contribution to The Rainbow Centre.

Created for The Dolly Project in 2019, this customised Ddung doll is a recreation of the arrest of American Civil Rights activist & Feminist Icon Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist who refused to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. On 1st December, 1955, she rejected the bus drivers demand that she give up her seat in the 'coloured' section of the bus so that a white passenger could sit down as the 'whites-only' section was full. She was subsequently arrested for 'civil disobedience' under Alabama law. Having been humiliated and mistreated by bus drivers, including the driver of that vehicle james F. Blake, before (Blake had taken her fare payment, then driven off and left her standing in the rain before she had a chance to re-enter the bus through the 'coloured' door in a previous incident) Parks decided that she had had enough. She said "My resisting being mistreated on the bus did not begin with that particular arrest. I did a lot of walking in Montgomery."
In her Biography she wrote of the incident:
'People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in'.
Although not the first person to resist bus segregation, she made a court challenge against the segregation laws (with support from the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People). Her actions inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the first major direct action campaign in the American Civil Rights Movement, during which coloured people boycotted the Montgomery busses for over a year. Its success launched nationwide efforts to end racial segregation of public facilities.

Despite the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, activists like Rosa and Martin Luther King suffered severe penalties for their actions. parks lost her job due to her activism, and received death threats for the rest of her life. Celebrated as the 'First lady of Civil Rights' and 'Mother of the Freedom Movement', she continued to organise for Civil Rights and education for the rest of her life, including supporting the Selma-To-Montgomery marches, the Freedom Now Party, the Black Power Movement and the Black Panthers. She also worked on freeing the Wilmington 10, the RNA 11 & Gary Tyler, all wrongfully accused of crimes against white people.

Information for Artists wishing to Exhibit in The Pocket Gallery

To make enquiries about placing a piece of artwork within The Pocket Gallery, please email folkestoneharbouryarn@yahoo.com.

Gallery Dimensions & Display Space
The gallery is 15cm wide, 12 cm deep and 13.5cm at its highest point. Please note that it is an attic space so the roof slopes on both sides. It has an oiled wooden floor with white walls & ceiling. There is a small strip of daylight coloured lights which can be operated by viewers using a waterproof button on the front of the structure. This is battery powered. We have a 12cm high easel for displaying mini canvases or drawings. You can place objects on the floor, suspend them from the ceiling or attach them to the walls if you like. We also have two 10cm square clear acrylic cubes which can be placed inside the gallery with objects around or inside them. The walls and perspex window can be drawn on if they are wiped clean/repainted at the end of your show. Alternatively you could line the walls with card to create a different space.

Sale of Artworks & Commission
The Pocket Gallery charges no commission on artworks displayed, if sold. Your items can be N.F.S. if you prefer. It is really just a bit of fun for the creative community so there is no pressure to put monetary value on items within.

Security, Weather & value of Artwork.
The gallery is securely sunk into the ground with concrete, and the back door is secured with a padlock. There are some security cameras around the old high street and Payers park, but none pointed directly at the Gallery/Library. The gallery & garden are overlooked by flats, offices and restaurants which provides some deterrent for antisocial behaviour.

The gallery/library structure is weather resistant with a solid roof, painted in weatherproof paint, sealant around the front window, and foam weather seal around the rear hatch, however I would not recommend placing a high value, sentimental value or fragile item on display within as if somebody took it upon themselves to damage the gallery/library there would be very little to stop them. As the gallery is just a bit of fun for the local community there is no insurance for artworks and therefore all items placed within are "at your own risk". Sorry :(

Available Dates 2020:

The Gallery is now booked up until late November 2021. We will notify artists again when gallery slots open up.
